Carrot and Pea Stew, also known as “Bazella w Riz” in Arabic, translating to peas with rice, is a cherished staple in Middle Eastern households. This dish holds a special place on the table, particularly during the chilly winter months. It’s hearty, comforting, and nutritious, and it’s made with only a handful of ingredients.

Made with peas, carrots, and beef chunks, all simmered in a tomato infused broth and served over rice, it’s a simple yet delicious meal. The best part is — you can make enough to have leftovers. Cook once, eat twice!

Here I used fresh carrots because I prefer large chunks, but frozen peas and carrots work just fine. I used a pressure cooker to speed things up, but if you’re more of a Dutch oven or instant pot person, no worries – just tweak the cooking time. I hope you enjoy this as much as I do!

Ingredients

  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 lb lean stew meat cubed
  • all spice, salt, and pepper to taste
  • 1 yellow onion diced
  • 5 garlic cloves crushed
  • 5 large carrots diced
  • 1 bag frozen peas
  • 3 tbsp tomato paste
  • 8 oz tomato sauce
  • 4 cups water

Instructions

Pressure Cook the Beef:

  • Heat 1 tbsp oil in the pressure cooker.
  • Toss in the beef, season with allspice and salt, and sautee until browned.
  • Pour enough water to cover the beef, bring it to a boil, skim off the fat, then close and lock the pressure cooker. Cook for about 45 mins.

Prepare the Base in a Dutch Oven:

  • In another pot or dutch oven, heat 1 tbsp oil.
  • Sauté onions and garlic until they're translucent.
  • Stir in the tomato paste first, then pour in the tomato sauce and water.
  • If using fresh carrots, add them now.
  • Let it all simmer for about 20 mins.

Combine Everything:

  • Once the beef is done in the pressure cooker, mix it into the pot.
  • Add the peas.
  • Simmer for an additional 20-30 mins to let all the flavors become friends.
  • Serve the bazella over vermicelli rice.

Notes

To make it vegan, leave out the meat. You can also substitute chicken if you’d like.
